Matthew's Gospel

What does it mean to read a story from the inside out? When we approach the Gospel of Matthew with fresh eyes, understanding who wrote it, who it was written for, and why, everything changes. Matthew was not simply a religious biography. It was a declaration, written in the tradition of the Greek word euangelion, meaning the proclamation of a new king and a new kingdom. Matthew was doing exactly what the Great Commission in Matthew 28 commanded: teaching others to obey everything the Rabbi Jesus knew, did, and stood for, so that we could become just like him. That is discipleship in its most ancient and powerful form. The spiritual lesson here is profound. We are not merely readers of a historical document. We are being invited into a kingdom, called to adopt its culture, and commissioned to carry its message. The question for each of us is whether we are engaging Scripture as passive observers or as people being shaped and sent by a living King.
